What is a direct cremation and why would you want one?

No-frills funerals are increasingly popular but they’re not for everyone

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A popular choice

Musician David Bowie had one, and so did the award-winning novelist Anita Brookner. Direct cremations are an alternative to a standard funeral. So why are they increasingly popular?

One reason is cost. The average price of a standard cremation in the UK has risen sharply in recent years, from £1,728 in 2004 to £3,744 in 2018.

Direct cremations are substantially cheaper, making them appealing to people who struggle to find the money for a standard funeral. Rising public demand in Wales has even led to a cemetery in Wrexham introducing nine direct cremation slots a week.

No fuss

It’s not just the low cost that makes direct cremations attractive. Some people don’t want any fuss when it comes to their own passing. With a direct cremation, there’s no formal ceremony or funeral service for relatives and friends to attend.

Instead, the deceased is collected and transported to the crematorium to be cremated. The ashes are returned to their closest relative.

The choice of direct cremation vs a standard funeral comes down to your personal preference. David Bowie reportedly wanted one so that his fans would focus on his lifetime achievements rather than his body and death.

But while the memory of Bowie and Anita Brookner will live on in their music and writing, for most people a funeral is often the best way for family and friends to remember us.

Even if you don’t like the idea of a funeral yourself, your loved ones might prefer to give you a send off. They might want to pay their respects to you in a formal way, and a funeral could help them begin the process of emotional healing after your loss.
